Medical Grade Nitinol tubing is commonly used in orthopedic implants, catheters, stents, and superelastic Needle Gauge:#7~#19.
Nitinol: Ni-Ti Alloy also name as Shape Memory (superelasticity, pseudoelasticity) Alloy contains Titanium and Nickel roughly equal atomic percentages (50% Nickel atomic percent = 55% weight percent). Good corrosion resistance, duplex alloys also has ultra-high elastic limit, and non-linear superelastic characteristics. Nickel-titanium alloy has similar performance as hair of human tissue, bones and tendons can reach about 10% strain rate which with the external force is nonlinear related. When the external force resulting in deformation disappears, it only takes small stress to recover. For example, when temperature is above 40 ℃, the alloy stays in parent shape. When the alloy is cooled from 40 ℃ (Af temperature) to 30 ℃ (Mf temperature) in formation of Martensite, it’s ready to deform. When reheated to 40 ℃ (Af temperature), with phase inverter, the alloy will be automatically restored parent shape. In fact, the shape memory effect is a nickel-titanium alloy's phase transition triggered within a certain temperature range. Nitinol composition of Nickel/Titanium ratios and processing phases determines different transformation temperature range. M&T supplies Nitinol as Nickel: 54~57% by weight, Titanium the balance. On demand Nickel/Titanium ratios for different applications and requirements are available.
